The Nigeria Immigration Service, Zone A, has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for its sustained efforts in combating corruption and economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
The commendation was made on Thursday, September 10, by the Zonal Coordinator of NIS Zone A, Assistant Comptroller-General Mohammed Adamu, when he received the Acting Director of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Adebayo Adeniyi, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the NIS Zonal Headquarters in Lagos.
Adamu praised the EFCC for what he described as its consistent efforts to tackle corruption and financial crimes, noting that the Commission’s activities had contributed to Nigeria’s image both domestically and internationally.
He described the EFCC as one of the country’s prominent and hardworking law-enforcement institutions, particularly in its pursuit of financial crime cases and prosecution of offenders.
According to him, the convictions secured by the Commission had helped strengthen the fight against corruption and served as a deterrent to individuals who might otherwise engage in economic and financial crimes.
“I am highly delighted to receive you and your entourage from the EFCC, one of the most prestigious and hardworking agencies in Nigeria. Thank you for a job well done. The EFCC has recorded significant achievements and secured convictions. These convictions serve as a deterrent to potential offenders, and Nigerians are proud of your work,” Adamu said.
The NIS official reaffirmed the Immigration Service’s commitment to strengthening its existing relationship with the EFCC, particularly through intelligence sharing and other forms of inter-agency cooperation.
He said closer collaboration between both agencies would improve their capacity to identify, investigate and disrupt activities linked to economic and financial crimes.
Adamu also disclosed that he would communicate the outcome of the EFCC delegation’s visit to the NIS headquarters to further reinforce awareness of the existing relationship between the two institutions.
“I will communicate this visit to the Headquarters so that they are aware of the strong working relationship we have with the EFCC,” he said.
The NIS Zonal Coordinator further requested increased training and capacity-building opportunities for immigration personnel, saying specialised training would enhance the effectiveness, competence and professionalism of officers in the performance of their responsibilities.
He noted that improved capacity would enable personnel to respond more effectively to emerging challenges associated with economic and financial crimes and other forms of cross-border criminal activity.
In his response, Adeniyi expressed appreciation to the NIS for the cooperation and institutional support the EFCC had received over the years.
He said the purpose of the visit was not only to appreciate the existing relationship between both agencies but also to seek ways of sustaining and strengthening the partnership.
“We appreciate your office for the cooperation we have enjoyed over the years. We are here to express our gratitude and to sustain the existing relationship,” Adeniyi said.
He also encouraged the NIS to communicate any concerns relating to the EFCC’s operations, assuring that the Commission remained committed to conducting its activities in accordance with due process.
“If there are any issues regarding our operations, please let us know. The Commission is committed to ensuring that everything is handled in line with due process. We look forward to continued cooperation,” he added.
The engagement underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in Nigeria’s fight against corruption and financial crimes, particularly through intelligence exchange, professional training and coordinated law-enforcement efforts.
Both agencies are expected to sustain their partnership as they work towards strengthening institutional capacity and supporting efforts to combat economic and financial crimes.
