Atlético Madrid moved provisionally to the top of the Spanish La Liga standings on Saturday after defeating Levante 2–0 at the Ciutat de València Stadium.

Goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone secured a seventh consecutive league victory for Diego Simeone’s side, taking Atlético one point ahead of Barcelona, who were scheduled to face Alavés later in the day.

The visitors overcame early pressure from Levante, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak producing an important save to deny Dani Requena.

Atlético thought they had taken the lead when Morten Hjulmand found the net following a pass from Álex Baena, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee review.

Grimaldo eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake after Baena’s pass was not properly cleared.

The defender reacted quickly inside the penalty area and fired a powerful shot past Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Atlético maintained their attacking momentum after the interval, with Kang-in Lee striking the crossbar as the visitors searched for a second goal.

Their advantage was doubled in the 62nd minute when Giuliano Simeone, son of the Atlético manager, finished a well-worked attacking move after another decisive pass from Baena.

Levante attempted to respond, but Oblak produced another crucial save to deny Karl Etta Eyong and preserve Atlético’s clean sheet.

The victory extended Atlético’s impressive league run and strengthened their position in the title race.

It also marked a significant personal milestone for Diego Simeone, who equalled the club record of 344 La Liga victories previously held by legendary manager Luis Aragonés.

The Argentine coach has established himself as one of Atlético’s most successful managers, overseeing the club’s transformation into a consistent challenger for major domestic and European honours.

Before kickoff, both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of 69 people killed in a train crash in Spain’s Toledo province earlier in the week.

Players also wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Atlético now turn their attention to Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich before hosting Barcelona in a potentially decisive La Liga fixture next weekend.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, who entered the weekend third in the standings, are scheduled to face Racing Santander on Sunday.
