A 23-year-old Nigerian student, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment in the United States after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and discharging it during a domestic dispute involving his former girlfriend and their infant child.

The conviction was announced in a statement issued by the United States Attorney’s Office.

According to the statement, Oghenebrume was sentenced by U.S. Chief Judge, Shelly Dick after admitting to possession of a firearm while residing in the United States under an F-1 student visa, an offence that violates U.S. federal law.

Authorities said he would also be subject to deportation upon completing his prison sentence.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred on February 7, 2025, after Oghenebrume’s former girlfriend, who is the mother of their infant child, arrived at his apartment with the child while he was allegedly with another woman.

An argument reportedly broke out outside the apartment, during which Oghenebrume allegedly discharged a Glock Model 43X 9mm pistol while the child was present.

According to investigators, the dispute continued after the woman entered the apartment and allegedly found him with another woman before spilling back outside, where additional shots were fired as she fled the scene.

Authorities said several bullet impacts were later found on the walls of the apartment complex.

Investigators further alleged that Oghenebrume damaged his former girlfriend’s mobile phone and retained custody of the child before another woman at the apartment assisted in retrieving the infant.

The statement said deputies from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office later responded to the scene, but Oghenebrume allegedly ignored repeated commands to stop and attempted to walk away before throwing the firearm into nearby shrubs.

He was subsequently arrested, while the weapon was recovered by law enforcement officers.

A neighbour reportedly told investigators that the gunshots were loud enough to leave his ears ringing.

During a post-Miranda interview, Oghenebrume admitted firing the weapon, claiming he intended to frighten his former girlfriend into leaving the premises.

Following his prison term, U.S. immigration authorities are expected to commence deportation proceedings against him.
