NBA legend Charles Barkley has questioned the widespread belief that LeBron James is defying age, arguing that the veteran forward’s impressive individual statistics should be viewed alongside his team’s recent playoff performances.
Speaking during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Barkley acknowledged that James continues to produce at a high level despite being 41 years old, but said regular-season numbers alone do not determine a player’s overall impact.
“We have to be honest about LeBron. If he gets swept in the playoffs the last couple of years, just because you’re putting up good numbers doesn’t mean you’re being effective,” Barkley said.
The former NBA MVP added that while James remains one of the league’s most productive players, he does not agree with the argument that the four-time champion has overcome the effects of ageing.
Barkley’s comments come after James’ recent playoff runs with the Los Angeles Lakers, including a second-round sweep against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2025-2026 postseason. The Lakers had previously experienced early playoff exits in two other seasons, although those defeats were not sweeps.
Despite the criticism, James’ eight-year spell with the Lakers produced significant achievements. During his time in Los Angeles, he helped the franchise win the 2020 NBA championship and maintained career averages of 25.9 points, 7.9 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game.
James also guided the Lakers back into playoff contention multiple times, missing the postseason only twice during his tenure with the team.
Barkley’s remarks have renewed debate among basketball fans over how James’ longevity should be evaluated — whether through individual statistics and sustained performance at an advanced age, or through postseason success and championship results.
The discussion comes as James continues his NBA career after more than two decades at the highest level, with analysts and former players divided over his legacy and current impact on the game.
