A supercomputer analysis has identified Spain as the leading favourite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The 2026 edition will be the first FIFA World Cup to feature an expanded 48-team format, with 12 groups of four teams and a record 104 matches.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 11, 2026, and conclude on July 19, 2026, with the final set to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

According to projections by Opta’s Supercomputer, Spain emerged as the most likely team to lift the trophy after being crowned champions in 16.1 per cent of 10,000 tournament simulations.

The prediction places Spain ahead of several traditional football powerhouses, including France, England and Argentina, all of whom were given more than a 10 per cent chance of winning the tournament.

Five-time world champions Brazil also feature prominently among the favourites, alongside Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium.

Top 10 favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup according to the Opta Supercomputer:

  1. Spain
  2. France
  3. England
  4. Argentina
  5. Brazil
  6. Germany
  7. Netherlands
  8. Portugal
  9. Norway
  10. Belgium

Despite hosting the competition, the United States, Mexico and Canada were not considered among the leading contenders, with the simulations indicating a relatively low probability of any of the three co-host nations winning the title.
