Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has reportedly promised head coach Jose Mourinho that he will focus on rebuilding his career and restoring the club’s confidence following a drink-driving conviction that has placed his future under scrutiny.
The 23-year-old centre-back was stopped at a breathalyser checkpoint in southern Gran Canaria on August 16 while driving a Porsche Macan GTS. Reports from Spanish media said Asencio failed two alcohol tests after recording levels above Spain’s legal limit.
Following a fast-track court hearing, the Real Madrid player was fined €14,400 and handed an eight-month driving suspension.

The incident came as another legal matter involving Asencio remained ongoing. The defender is also facing proceedings connected to allegations that he shared a sexually explicit video involving former Real Madrid youth academy teammates in 2023. Reports said he had apologised to the complainants and paid compensation.

Since Mourinho returned as Real Madrid manager on a three-year contract, the Portuguese coach has faced several challenges surrounding the squad, including transfer speculation involving Vinicius Junior and disciplinary issues involving Asencio.
According to reports from Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Asencio has held a private meeting with Mourinho, during which he expressed his determination to move past recent controversies and concentrate on improving his performances on the pitch.
Real Madrid have reportedly opened internal disciplinary proceedings against the defender over the drink-driving conviction. The club is expected to decide whether further sanctions, including a financial penalty or other disciplinary measures, will be imposed.

Asencio is understood to be aware that regaining the trust of the club and supporters will require consistent performances and professional conduct. Reports have suggested Real Madrid previously considered his possible departure during the summer transfer window, although an injury affected potential negotiations.
The defender, who progressed through Real Madrid’s youth system before breaking into the first team, is now expected to work towards securing his place under Mourinho as he attempts to put the recent controversies behind him.
