The United States government has announced a temporary suspension of visa bond requirements for football supporters from five African countries attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a move aimed at easing travel arrangements ahead of the tournament.
The decision affects citizens of Algeria, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia who have secured valid match tickets and enrolled in FIFA’s special pass system designed to speed up visa processing.
The visa bond policy, introduced as part of broader immigration enforcement measures, previously required travellers from countries with high visa overstay rates and other security concerns to provide refundable financial guarantees ranging between $5,000 and $15,000.
The affected countries were among 50 nations subjected to the requirement when the measure was introduced last year.
US officials said the latest adjustment is intended to facilitate smoother travel for football supporters expected to attend the global tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico beginning on June 11, 2026.
Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Mora Namdar, said the United States was preparing to host what it described as the biggest edition of the FIFA World Cup and noted that the exemption was designed to support fans planning to attend the competition.
Players, coaching staff and certain officials had already been exempted from the visa bond policy before the latest announcement.
Despite the waiver for selected supporters, the administration is maintaining broader immigration measures affecting other categories of travellers.
Additional requirements, including social media background checks and other security screening procedures, remain in force.
Some advocacy groups have criticised strict immigration measures surrounding the tournament, arguing that such policies could conflict with the spirit of inclusiveness and global unity often associated with international sporting events.
Industry observers have also warned that visa restrictions and uncertainty surrounding travel rules may affect visitor turnout and tourism-related revenue during the competition.
While the waiver offers relief for eligible supporters, authorities clarified that the broader visa bond programme remains in place for travellers from countries still covered by the policy, with refunds available to applicants who comply with visa conditions.
