The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit currency in Lafia.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, apprehended the suspect following credible intelligence.

The statement disclosed that Hassan was arrested at the Lafia cattle market while allegedly trading fake ₦1,000 notes.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect confessed to receiving the counterfeit currency from an accomplice reportedly residing in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia. Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the said accomplice.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has urged members of the public, particularly traders, small business owners, fuel station attendants, Point-of-Sale (POS) operators, and motor park workers, to exercise caution in their daily financial transactions.
He advised them to be vigilant and look out for common indicators of counterfeit notes, including poor print quality, unusual texture, duplicated serial numbers, reduced size, and absence of key security features.

The Commissioner further encouraged the public to promptly report any individual found in possession of, or attempting to circulate, suspected fake currency to the nearest police station for swift action.
