The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has intervened in the complaints by students of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) over the alleged delay in the payment of upkeep allowances under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
National President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed that the students’ concerns had been formally escalated to the leadership of NELFUND for urgent attention.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Babatunde said the association had taken up the matter following reports by affected students that they had not received their upkeep allowances since January.
He assured students that the issue was receiving the attention of the management of NELFUND and expressed optimism that efforts were underway to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
According to him, the student body has received assurances from the loan fund that steps are being taken to address the delay and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their outstanding payments.
The NANS president appealed to affected students to remain calm and patient while discussions with relevant authorities continue.
He reiterated the association’s commitment to sustained engagement with NELFUND and other stakeholders until all legitimate concerns raised by students are addressed.
“NANS will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders until every legitimate concern is resolved and every deserving beneficiary receives his or her entitlement,” he said.
Babatunde further reaffirmed that the welfare of Nigerian students remains a top priority for the association, stressing that it would continue to advocate for the protection of students’ rights and interests.
As of the time of filing this report, NELFUND had not issued a separate official statement on the reported delay in the payment of upkeep allowances to the affected University of Uyo students.
