Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed that democracy remains the most suitable system of government for Nigeria, citing the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.

In a goodwill message marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Fubara said June 12 represents more than a historic date, describing it as a symbol of Nigerians’ enduring struggle, sacrifice and aspiration for freedom, justice and representative governance.

The governor extended congratulations to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, while paying tribute to key figures of the pro-democracy movement, including MKO Abiola and Kudirat Abiola, as well as others whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration of democratic rule in the country.

Fubara noted that 33 years after the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Nigeria’s democratic journey has continued to progress despite various challenges and setbacks.

According to him, democracy provides the best framework for managing the country’s diversity and transforming it into a source of national strength and development.

The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda and efforts aimed at economic revitalisation, improved security and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He reiterated Rivers State’s readiness to continue collaborating with the Federal Government in implementing policies and programmes that improve the welfare of citizens through infrastructure development, job creation, enhanced security, quality education, healthcare delivery and good governance.

Fubara further urged Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation, ethnicity or religion, to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their commitment to national unity and the principles of democratic governance.
