A British-based non-league goalkeeper, George Kamurasi, has been selected to become the next king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom.
Kamurasi, 36, who plays in the ninth tier of the English football pyramid, was chosen by a selection committee to succeed his late cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
King Oyo, 34, died while receiving treatment for cancer, leaving the Tooro Kingdom to begin the process of selecting his successor.
Kamurasi, popularly known as “Big G”, is a British citizen and captain of SE Dons, a club competing in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division in southeast London.
At the club, he is recognised for his commanding presence and leadership qualities, with footage showing him giving passionate team talks to his teammates.
Despite being selected for the traditional position, Kamurasi is reportedly reluctant to abandon his life in London, where he lives with his wife and son, and return to Uganda to assume the throne.
His selection has also generated mixed reactions among Ugandans.
While some have welcomed his outspoken and “no-nonsense” personality, others have questioned whether someone who grew up in Britain can effectively represent and lead the Tooro people.
The funeral of King Oyo, who ascended the throne at just three years old in 1995, is scheduled for this weekend.
Kamurasi is from a prominent royal family. His grandfather, King George Rukidi III, received Queen Elizabeth II during her historic visit to Uganda in 1954.
The unusual circumstances surrounding Kamurasi’s selection have been further complicated by his football commitments.
He could reportedly miss his late cousin’s funeral because it coincides with a cup fixture involving SE Dons.
The club competes in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, which is classified as Level 9 in England’s football pyramid.
Kamurasi now faces a difficult choice between maintaining his family life and football career in London and returning to Uganda to take up the traditional responsibilities associated with the Tooro throne.
