The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a 30 to 80 per cent salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the measure as a timely boost to troops’ welfare and morale.
Kalu, former Abia State governor, made the commendation in a statement shared on his official social media platform on Wednesday.
The salary review, which takes effect from September 1, is expected to benefit about 250,000 personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force and increase the Federal Government’s annual military wage bill by an estimated N264 billion.

Kalu said the adjustment recognises the sacrifices made by military personnel in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
He described improved welfare for troops as both a moral responsibility and a strategic investment in strengthening the country’s security system.
The senator urged military personnel and other security agencies to reciprocate the government’s gesture by maintaining professionalism, fairness and respect for citizens’ rights.

He expressed confidence that better welfare would improve the morale and operational effectiveness of troops, stressing that national security remains essential to economic growth, unity and sustainable development.
Kalu reaffirmed his support for measures aimed at improving the welfare, capacity and readiness of Nigeria’s security personnel.
