The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reiterated the importance of enhanced medical welfare for police personnel as he received a delegation from the Board of Directors of Police Health Maintenance Limited (PHML) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit on Tuesday, the IGP was formally inaugurated as Chairman of the PHML Board, a development expected to strengthen oversight and improve healthcare delivery for officers nationwide.

The delegation was led by retired Deputy Inspector-General, Aminu Yesufu, and included key stakeholders such as Adenike Abuwa, Dr Otive Iguzor, Dr Yusuf Kalli Gazali, and the Force Medical Director, Nkechi Eze.

Speaking during the meeting, PHML leadership reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare services for police personnel, citing recent renovations of police hospitals across several states, including Akure, Sokoto, Yola, and Lagos. The organisation also disclosed new partnerships with federal tertiary hospitals to provide immediate, cost-free treatment for officers suffering gunshot wounds and other trauma-related injuries.

In addition, a specialised collaboration with Zenith Healthcare Limited was announced to deliver advanced renal care services, aimed at addressing chronic health conditions among officers.

In his remarks, IGP Disu stressed that the health and well-being of officers remain central to national security. He urged PHML to focus beyond administrative benchmarks and ensure that healthcare initiatives translate into tangible benefits for rank-and-file personnel.

The police chief also highlighted existing challenges, including limited insurance coverage for retired officers and the need to rehabilitate medical facilities within police barracks nationwide.

He reaffirmed his commitment to building a resilient and effective police force, noting that optimal performance in safeguarding lives and property depends largely on the physical and mental well-being of officers.
