Ghana football legend, Asamoah Gyan has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the development as a significant loss for African football.
The former Black Stars captain shared his thoughts while discussing the longstanding sporting rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, two of the continent’s most successful football nations.

Despite the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams, with Africa allocated 10 qualification slots, the Super Eagles were unable to secure a place at the tournament scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the global showpiece ended after a dramatic playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, who prevailed in a penalty shootout following a fiercely contested encounter.
Reacting to the outcome, Gyan said it was unfortunate that a team with Nigeria’s quality and football pedigree would miss out on the competition.
He noted that while Ghana enjoys close ties with neighbouring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, its football rivalry with Nigeria remains one of the most intense and respected on the continent.
According to the former striker, the competitive relationship between both nations has always been healthy and has contributed significantly to the growth and excitement of African football.
Gyan praised the strength and talent within the current Super Eagles squad, stressing that Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup would be felt given the country’s rich football history and passionate fan base.
The failure to qualify marks another difficult chapter for the Super Eagles, who will now miss consecutive World Cup tournaments for the first time since making their debut appearance at the competition in 1994.
Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most recognised football nations, having produced several generations of world-class players and represented the continent on the global stage on multiple occasions.

As preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue, many football observers believe the Super Eagles will be looking to rebuild and return stronger ahead of future international competitions.
