The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the political reconciliation between himself and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that the governor committed no offence by returning to the political camp that brought him to power.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday after inspecting ongoing road projects across the Federal Capital Territory, Wike dismissed suggestions that Fubara had been “forgiven” following their prolonged political feud, stressing that politics is about making choices and correcting mistakes.
“I don’t know what you mean by sin,” Wike said. “In politics, there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that. Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognising that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision.”
The former Rivers State governor said Fubara’s decision to return to the political family that produced him was both necessary and beneficial for the state, adding that the reconciliation would strengthen efforts to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general election.
Wike recalled that he had predicted during his last media chat that Fubara would eventually retrace his steps and reunite with his political structure.
“I said during my last media chat that he had no other choice but to return to the same political family that produced him. I have now been informed that he has made that declaration publicly, and we welcome him. Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward,” he said.
According to the FCT minister, Fubara’s public declaration of reconciliation signals a new phase of political unity in Rivers State and would enhance the Rainbow Coalition’s campaign efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
“He has publicly stated that he has returned to where he started, and we receive him with an open mind. There is nothing to hide. We will all work together to ensure that we deliver the votes President Tinubu needs for his re-election,” Wike added.
The reconciliation follows Fubara’s remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Rivien Medical Industry project in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State last week, where the governor announced that he had returned to Wike’s political family.
At the event, Fubara declared his support for the Rainbow Coalition, endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office, and urged his supporters across the state to align with the coalition and support all its candidates in future elections.
The governor also said the era of political confrontation in Rivers State had come to an end, emphasising the need for unity, stability and collective progress.
Meanwhile, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of infrastructure development in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly the ongoing construction of the ISEX Road Corridor and the Apo-Karshi Road.
He disclosed that the contractor handling the ISEX Road project had assured the administration that the road would be ready for commissioning in December, provided the government continues to meet its funding obligations.
The minister reiterated his administration’s commitment to completing inherited projects rather than abandoning them, describing continuity in governance as a hallmark of responsible leadership.
“Some people assume office and say they will only focus on projects they initiated. That is not leadership. Good leadership is continuing projects that are vital to the development of the city, projects that transform the landscape and improve the economy.
“We are pleased with the progress the contractors are making. It is now our responsibility to fulfil our own obligations so they can complete these projects on schedule,” Wike said.
