Bobby Cox, the legendary manager who guided the Atlanta Braves through one of the most successful eras in Major League Baseball history, has died at the age of 84.

The Braves confirmed his death in a statement released on Saturday, describing Cox as one of the most respected figures in baseball.

“Bobby was a favourite among all in the baseball community, especially those who played for him,” the club said in a post on X. “His wealth of knowledge on player development and the intricacies of managing the game were rewarded with the sport’s ultimate prize in 2014 enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame.”

The team added that Cox’s deep passion for baseball was matched only by his devotion to his family, extending condolences to his wife, Pam, and their children and grandchildren.

Cox is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers in baseball history. During his tenure with the Braves, he led the franchise to 14 consecutive division titles between 1991 and 2005, five National League pennants, and the 1995 World Series championship.

Over a managerial career spanning 29 seasons, including four years with the Toronto Blue Jays, Cox amassed 2,401 career victories — the fourth-highest total in MLB history behind Connie Mack, Tony La Russa, and John McGraw.

He also played a significant role in the rise of the Blue Jays during the 1980s, guiding the club to its first winning season in 1983 and its first division title in 1985.

In 2014, Cox was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in recognition of his contributions to the sport and his remarkable managerial achievements.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the baseball world, with players, coaches, and fans remembering Cox for his leadership, consistency, and ability to build championship-calibre teams.

His death comes just days after the passing of media mogul Ted Turner, who owned the Braves during much of Cox’s tenure and played a major role in transforming the franchise into a national powerhouse during the 1980s and 1990s.
