A 100-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has reportedly been shot by suspected cultists, two days after rival cult groups clashed on the institution’s campus.
The latest incident occurred on Wednesday amid heightened tension following Monday’s reported shooting involving suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups.
Details of Wednesday’s attack remain sketchy, but a source close to the victim said the student was rushed to a hospital, where he was receiving treatment for pellet injuries.
The source said the victim’s friends were raising funds for surgery to remove pellets lodged in his body.
The identity of the student and whether he was affiliated with any cult group could not be independently established.
A viral video circulating online showed the injured student on a hospital bed before being carried into the university campus by some of his coursemates.
The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s cult clash and said investigations were ongoing.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, stated that she had viewed the viral video concerning Wednesday’s incident and would obtain further details from the Divisional Police Officer in the area. She had not yet provided further details as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the university management has suspended all remaining activities marking the Students’ Union Government Week with immediate effect.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie, management directed students to return to their classrooms on Thursday, August 13, for normal academic activities.
The university warned students against actions capable of threatening peace and security on campus, stressing that students who fail to attend lectures would be held responsible for their actions.
The development has heightened concerns over security on the institution’s campus as authorities move to prevent further violence and restore normal academic activities.
