Australia’s government has proposed new regulations that would allow social media users to choose the type of content displayed on their feeds, as part of wider efforts to strengthen online safety.
Under the proposed rules, social media platforms would be required to notify users about their feed options and allow them to decide whether they want algorithm-driven recommendations or content only from accounts and creators they follow.
The proposal forms part of Australia’s broader digital safety reforms aimed at increasing transparency among technology companies and giving users greater control over their online experiences.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the reforms were designed to provide users with more choice while holding major technology companies accountable for ensuring safer digital environments.
The government said the measures would target concerns around harmful online content and the impact of recommendation algorithms, particularly on younger users. The proposed framework would also require platforms to assess and report on measures taken to address online harms.
The reforms follow Australia’s previous move to restrict social media access for children under 16, as the country continues efforts to address online safety concerns.
Technology companies, including major social media platforms, are expected to face increased obligations under the proposed legislation, with penalties possible for companies that fail to comply with the new requirements.
The proposal has attracted debate, with supporters saying it would empower users and improve online safety, while some critics have raised concerns about regulation, free speech and possible government overreach.
The Australian government is expected to continue consultations with digital platforms and other stakeholders before introducing the legislation to Parliament.
