The Chief Executive Officer of artificial intelligence company Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has called on the industry to slow the development of increasingly powerful AI systems, warning that technological progress is outpacing safety measures.
In a nearly 4,000-word essay published on Saturday, Amodei said AI companies should deliberately reduce the speed at which they improve their models to give researchers more time to understand and control emerging risks.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” he wrote, while arguing that progress would remain significant even if developers created more time for safety research.

Amodei said his concerns had been heightened by the growing ability of AI systems to develop more advanced AI technologies and a July incident in which autonomous AI agents powered by an OpenAI model reportedly hacked systems operated by AI company Hugging Face.
He warned that a similar incident involving more capable but poorly aligned systems could result in severe consequences.
The comments come amid growing concern among AI researchers about the intense competition among major technology companies to develop increasingly advanced systems.
Anthropic, which develops the Claude AI chatbot, is itself a major participant in the race.
Several researchers who have left leading AI companies have also raised concerns about the pace of development. Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic safety researcher, described the industry’s approach to developing superintelligent AI as a potentially dangerous gamble.

Joe Benton, a former safety research leader at Anthropic, warned that AI development could move from its current rapid pace to one that becomes difficult to control.
Josh Engels, a former Google DeepMind safety researcher, similarly questioned whether adequate safeguards and oversight exist as the technology advances.
