Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the reported death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
In a statement issued through his media office on Sunday, Atiku expressed grief over the loss of the retired military officer and criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that insecurity across the country has continued to deteriorate.

The former vice president pointed to recent security incidents, including attacks on educational institutions in Chibok, Borno State, as evidence that the nation’s security situation remains deeply troubling.
According to Atiku, the death of a senior military officer who dedicated much of his life to serving and defending the country underscores the growing vulnerability faced by Nigerians regardless of their status or background.
He described Major General Rabe as a respected officer who served the nation with commitment, professionalism and courage throughout his military career.
Atiku stated that it was both painful and unacceptable that a man who once played a key role in Nigeria’s security architecture could reportedly lose his life while being held by criminal elements.

The former presidential candidate argued that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to intensify efforts aimed at tackling banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent crime threatening communities across the country.
He further called for stronger and more effective security measures to protect citizens and restore public confidence in the government’s ability to safeguard lives and property.
