The Abia State Government has inaugurated a 35-member enforcement team to oversee the relocation of commercial bus operators to the newly established Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, with a strong warning against any form of harassment or violence during the exercise.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring that all commercial vehicles operating in Umuahia are moved into the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal as part of broader efforts to reorganise and modernise the state’s transport system.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, said the enforcement team was created to ensure compliance with government directives and restore order in the state’s transport sector.

Ukaegbu, who confirmed that the relocation exercise officially began on June 13, 2026, stressed that the government remains committed to improving safety, structure, and efficiency across all motor parks in Abia State.
He cautioned members of the enforcement team to carry out their duties with restraint and professionalism, emphasising that no driver, conductor, or transport operator should be subjected to intimidation or physical abuse during the process.
According to him, the objective of the exercise is not to create division among transport workers but to ensure uniform compliance with the new operational arrangement.
In his words, “I did not instruct anyone to intimidate or harm others. The goal is orderly relocation and uniform compliance, not segregation or conflict.”
He urged commercial transport operators in Umuahia to cooperate fully with the directive, describing it as a step taken in their collective interest and for the improvement of the city’s transport system.

Responding on behalf of the enforcement team, Chairman Uchenna Umekwe expressed appreciation to the state government for the trust placed in them. He assured that the team would operate within the law and adhere strictly to government guidelines in carrying out their responsibilities.
The relocation exercise is expected to continue in phases as authorities work to fully integrate commercial transport activities into the new terminal.
