Eight Nigerian soldiers have reportedly been killed after their patrol vehicle struck a landmine suspected to have been planted by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents in Borno State.
Military sources cited by AFP said the explosion occurred on Saturday in Kinuba village, approximately 25 kilometres from Gamboru, near the Cameroon border.
The soldiers were reportedly supervising local anti-insurgency militia members clearing bushes along a highway when their vehicle struck the explosive device.

One militia member was also reportedly injured in the blast.
The incident followed a separate attack on a military base in Mairari, Borno State, where military and local sources reported that 15 soldiers and five civilian militia members were killed.
The Nigerian military has not independently confirmed the casualty figures from the latest landmine explosion.
The incidents highlight continuing threats to security personnel operating against insurgent groups in Nigeria’s North-East.
