The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an investigation into a confrontation between Vehicle Inspection Office personnel and commercial motorcyclists in the Life Camp area of Abuja following an enforcement operation on Thursday evening.
The clash occurred at about 7 p.m. while a task force constituted by the Federal Capital Territory Administration was enforcing restrictions on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, on major roads and designated routes across the FCT.
Police preliminary findings indicated that the confrontation began after a VIO official attached to the task force became involved in an altercation with a commercial motorcyclist during the operation.
The disagreement subsequently escalated into a broader confrontation involving VIO personnel and okada riders in the area.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine how the initial altercation escalated.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said the command would make further details available as investigators establish the facts of the case.
The police did not immediately disclose whether anyone was arrested or injured during the confrontation.
Security personnel have since restored normalcy to the Life Camp area, according to the command.
The police urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities while the investigation is ongoing.
The command also advised members of the public to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activities to the appropriate security authorities.
