Two Filipino sailors were killed after a Saudi oil tanker came under attack while transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia’s national shipping company, Bahri, confirmed on Wednesday.
The vessel, SIDR, was involved in a “security incident” late Monday, according to Bahri, which confirmed the loss of the two crew members.
A Greek maritime security firm had earlier reported that unknown projectiles struck the tanker and another oil vessel in the strait.
The attacks come amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, with tensions further disrupting commercial traffic through the crucial waterway.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Wednesday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines while navigating the strait. Tehran has also accused some vessels of attempting to bypass its preferred transit route and says it intends to charge service fees.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes, has remained heavily disrupted since the conflict began.
