Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, haves foiled a terrorist attack on Kukawa town in Borno State, killing several insurgents and destroying motorcycles used by fleeing fighters.
The terrorists attacked troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion in Kukawa at about 10:50 p.m. on August 28.
Military authorities said the troops responded with direct and indirect fire, repelling the attack and forcing the terrorists to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
During the ensuing ground battle, several terrorists were neutralised, while others reportedly sustained gunshot wounds as they fled. Troops later recovered corpses of some of the attackers.
The fleeing terrorists were subsequently targeted in coordinated air operations.
Despite difficult weather conditions, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI struck terrorists taking cover under trees, killing an estimated 10 fighters.
Further intelligence from the Multi-National Joint Task Force tracked about 20 motorcycles conveying fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns and Kangarwa axis.
A follow-up precision air strike reportedly killed an additional 15 terrorists and destroyed 10 motorcycles.
Ground troops also recovered two motorcycles, neutralised another terrorist and seized ammunition and other items during subsequent exploitation operations.
Four military personnel sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and were evacuated by air for medical attention. They are reported to be in stable condition.
Operation HADIN KAI says troops have continued exploitation operations and battle damage assessment in the area, while maintaining pressure on terrorist groups across the North-East.
The Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, says the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence, ground and air operations in responding to terrorist threats.
