A truck transporting 33,000 litres of ethanol fell off the Second Rainbow Bridge in Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos State, on Wednesday, prompting an emergency response to prevent a possible fire or explosion.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded in the incident, which occurred at approximately 11 a.m.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, identified the vehicle as a FOTON truck with registration number APP 346 YC.

According to him, preliminary investigations indicated that the driver was speeding while negotiating a bend, causing the truck’s turntable to detach and fall onto the roundabout beneath the bridge.

The accident obstructed traffic and raised safety concerns because of the flammable nature of the ethanol being transported.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency immediately deployed its Eagle Response Team to secure the area and coordinate emergency operations.

Personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service applied chemical foam around the affected vehicle to suppress flammable vapours and minimise the risk of ignition.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also participated in securing the scene, restricting public access and managing traffic.

The LASEMA chief attributed the prevention of casualties to the coordinated intervention of emergency responders.

In a separate incident, the agency reported that a Dangote cement truck mounted a road divider and became immobilised at Oke Koto in Agege, disrupting traffic movement.

Oke-Osanyintolu said preliminary findings linked the accident to reckless driving.

LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team, working alongside LASTMA officials, deployed heavy-duty recovery equipment to remove the truck and restore traffic.

The vehicle was subsequently transferred to the LASTMA yard for further action.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in the Agege incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended the emergency personnel involved in both operations and urged drivers, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles transporting hazardous materials, to observe speed limits and traffic regulations.

He also encouraged residents to report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 767 and 112.

The incidents followed a separate fire emergency at an eight-room bungalow on Onitire Road, Itire, where responders rescued two men.

During that incident, a 42-year-old man reportedly sustained burns while helping a 75-year-old wheelchair user escape the building.
