The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured Civil Society Organisations of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, impartiality and neutrality ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
Disu gave the assurance on Friday during a meeting with representatives of CSOs in Abuja to discuss security concerns surrounding the election.
The delegation, led by the Executive Director of CISLAC, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, included representatives of YIAGA Africa, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Kimpact Development Initiative, CLEEN Foundation and other organisations.
The groups raised concerns over voter protection, political violence, misinformation and the participation of vulnerable groups in the election.
The IGP assured them that the concerns would receive due attention, adding that adequate police personnel would be deployed to polling units, with special consideration for persons with disabilities.
Disu described the Osun election as particularly important as the last off-cycle governorship poll before the 2027 general elections.
He urged political actors and other stakeholders to support a peaceful and credible election, while calling for continued collaboration between the police and CSOs through the timely sharing of credible information.
The Police Chief also assured Nigerians that the Force would remain focused on protecting the democratic process before, during and after the election.
