President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening national security.
The new salary package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Under the approved structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The salary review will increase the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
Announcing the approval in a statement on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the salary adjustment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.

President Tinubu commended members of the Armed Forces for their courage and sacrifices in confronting terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He assured that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the Armed Forces through the provision of weapons and advanced technological equipment to enhance operational effectiveness.

The President reiterated that security remains the foundation for national development, stressing that the government is committed to deploying all military and law enforcement resources necessary to eliminate threats to lives and property.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
