The arraignment of a Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as “Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya,” was on Friday stalled at the Anambra State High Court in Awka due to his alleged ill health.
Ezenagu, who appeared visibly weak, was assisted into the courtroom by security operatives, prompting concerns over his fitness to stand trial.
Presiding judge, Justice Jude Obiora, ruled that the defendant was unfit to take his plea and adjourned the case to June 3 to allow him to seek medical attention.
“The matter is hereby adjourned to June 3 for continuation,” the judge held.
Proceedings were preceded by a disagreement between the prosecution, led by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, and defence counsel, Kingsley Awuka, over whether the case should proceed.
While the prosecution argued for continuation, the defence insisted the defendant required urgent medical care and could not stand trial in his condition.
Speaking after the sitting, Nweke said the state remained ready to prosecute the case, while Awuka expressed hope that his client would be fit to face trial at the next hearing.
Ezenagu was earlier arrested by the state’s security outfit, Agunechemba, for allegedly violating the Homeland Security Law.
According to the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, the suspect allegedly lured individuals with promises of quick wealth through rituals linked to a stream near his residence—activities the government says contravene state security laws.
