The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has criticised plans by a group of Governor Umo Eno’s ward personal assistants to organise a statewide prayer session for the governor, describing the initiative as an admission of what it called the administration’s poor performance.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ewa Okpo, said the planned “368 Watchmen Statewide Prayers Initiative” was an embarrassment to the state government and reflected the administration’s inability to point to tangible achievements after nearly three years in office.
The PDP argued that rather than mobilising residents for prayers, the governor’s aides should have been showcasing development projects across the state’s 368 wards if, according to the party, the administration had delivered on its promises.
The opposition party maintained that while prayers are important, they must be complemented by visible actions, citing biblical passages in James 2 to support its position that faith without works is dead.
The statement further alleged that the state government had expended over ₦2.5 trillion in less than three years without commensurate development, insisting that what the administration requires is improved governance rather than public prayer sessions.
The PDP, however, acknowledged that Governor Eno needed divine guidance to redirect the affairs of the state but maintained that prayers alone could not substitute for effective leadership and performance.
