The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by presidential candidates and their running mates for the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, which began on Saturday, includes documents submitted by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu’s Form EC9 lists his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States. His transcript indicates that the degree was awarded “with honours” on June 22, 1979.
The documents also include his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) records, showing that he served in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983.
His employment history lists Mobil Nigeria Limited, where he worked from 1983 to 1992; the Lagos State Government, where he served from 1999 to 2007; and the Federal Government of Nigeria, where he has served since 2023.
The form lists his date of birth as March 29, 1952, and his occupation as politician. The entries for his primary and secondary education were recorded as “0000”, while his university qualification was listed as a B.Sc obtained in 1979.
Certificate
For Vice President Shettima, the displayed records cover his education from primary school through university.
His Certificate of Primary Education shows that he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978. His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, in June 1983, recorded six credits and passes.
Shettima subsequently attended the University of Maiduguri, where he obtained a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture in August 1989. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.
His NYSC records show that he served between October 1989 and October 1990.
The public display is being conducted pursuant to Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires INEC to publish candidates’ particulars within 21 days of receiving them.
INEC said Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.
The documents have been displayed at INEC offices nationwide, including the commission’s Lagos State office in Sabo-Yaba and relevant Local Government Area offices.
Members of the public are entitled under the Electoral Act to apply for certified true copies of nomination forms and other documents submitted by candidates. The law also provides avenues for legal action over allegations of false declaration or forgery.
Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections will begin later in accordance with INEC’s revised timetable.
