Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested 14 suspected criminals in separate intelligence-led operations targeting cultism and other criminal activities across the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the operations led to the recovery of two firearms, three live cartridges and other incriminating exhibits, describing the arrests as part of the police’s ongoing crackdown on violent crime.
According to the statement, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on the confessional statement of a suspect identified as Nwodo Chinweokwu, recovered a locally fabricated single-barrel pistol hidden in a bush at Eha-Amufu in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
The police said Chinweokwu had earlier been arrested and transferred to the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit by the Isi-Uzo Police Division following a joint operation that also led to the arrest of seven other male suspects.
In a separate operation, operatives of the same unit, acting on information provided by another suspect, Izuchukwu Obieze, who is under investigation for alleged conspiracy and cultism, carried out a follow-up operation in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
The operation resulted in the arrest of five additional suspects believed to be connected to the criminal activities under investigation.
The police said efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects and recover additional exhibits, adding that all those arrested will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for the successful operations and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling cultism, armed robbery and other violent crimes across Enugu State.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant, obey the law and continue supporting the police with credible and timely information to enhance security in the state.
