Football briefly overshadowed political divisions among Iranians on Monday as thousands of supporters rallied behind their national team during a thrilling 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
The Group G encounter attracted a large crowd from the Iranian diaspora, many of whom travelled from across the United States to support Team Melli in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although political differences were visible throughout the event, they appeared to take a back seat once the action began. Fans carrying both the official flag of the Islamic Republic and the pre-1979 lion-and-sun flag associated with opposition groups filled the stadium, yet united in support of the national team.
Each time Iran found the back of the net, the stadium erupted in celebration as chants of “Iran, Iran” echoed through the stands. Supporters from different political backgrounds cheered side by side as the team twice fought back to level the score against New Zealand.
Outside the stadium, a small group of demonstrators staged a protest against the Iranian government, waving Israeli flags and expressing support for opposition figure Reza Pahlavi. Some protesters also criticised the national team, alleging links to the Iranian establishment.
Despite concerns about possible tensions, the protest remained limited in size and no major incidents were reported before, during or after the match.
Political expressions remained visible inside the venue, with some supporters displaying opposition symbols and slogans, while others highlighted humanitarian concerns stemming from the recent conflict involving Iran. Several fans also carried messages commemorating civilian casualties, including children reportedly killed during the war.
The match itself provided a temporary escape from political debates. Iran showed resilience by coming from behind twice to secure a draw and earn a valuable point in the group stage. The team also came close to claiming victory after striking the woodwork during an entertaining contest.
The fixture carried additional significance as Iran’s participation in the tournament had faced uncertainty earlier in the year amid regional tensions. Nevertheless, once the match kicked off, attention shifted largely to events on the pitch.
For many supporters, the evening demonstrated football’s unique ability to bring together people with differing views, if only for 90 minutes. While political disagreements remained evident, the shared passion for the national team created moments of unity among fans who might otherwise find themselves on opposite sides of a divide.
