The Zamfara State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Muhammad Lawan, has called on Governor Dauda Lawal to establish a permanent orientation camp in the state to improve the conduct of NYSC programmes.
Lawan appealed on Tuesday during a meeting with the Zamfara Council leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Gusau.
He commended the state government for its support to the NYSC scheme, noting that improved security and welfare provisions had enhanced the conduct of corps members’ orientation and service activities in Zamfara.

According to him, a permanent orientation camp would provide adequate accommodation, improved security, and better facilities for corps members during their three-week orientation exercise.
Lawan added that the facility would also serve as a centre for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development for corps members and other youths in the state.
He further praised the establishment of the state NYSC Governing Board, describing it as a positive step in strengthening the scheme’s operations in Zamfara.
The coordinator said corps members continue to play a vital role in education, healthcare delivery, and community development across the state, especially in rural areas where their services remain essential.
He also highlighted various community development projects initiated by corps members, including boreholes, toilet facilities, mini-libraries, and other social interventions aimed at improving local living conditions.

Lawan reaffirmed NYSC’s commitment to national unity and youth development, recalling that the scheme was established in 1973 to promote post-civil war reconciliation and integration among Nigerian youths.
He expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support and urged journalists to further highlight the positive contributions of corps members across Zamfara State.
