Award-winning Somali referee, Omar Artan has reportedly been denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa, jeopardising his participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Artan, who was selected by FIFA as part of the 52-match officials for the tournament in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, was turned back at Miami International Airport and has since returned to Istanbul.

A senior adviser to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ciise Aden Abshir, described the decision as a setback for football, noting that Artan is among Africa’s most respected referees and deserved the opportunity to officiate at the global tournament.
While no official reason was immediately provided, the incident comes amid travel restrictions affecting several countries, including Somalia.
Artan made history as the first Somali referee selected for a FIFA World Cup and was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025. He has officiated international competitions, including the 2023 AFCON and major continental fixtures.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had earlier praised Artan’s achievement, describing him as an inspiration to a new generation of Somalis.
Authorities have yet to issue a detailed explanation regarding the entry denial.
