A gunman was shot dead by United States Secret Service agents after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening, in an incident that also left a bystander injured.

According to authorities, President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting but was not affected by the incident.

The confrontation reportedly occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. when the suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from a bag and began shooting near the White House security perimeter.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said officers immediately responded and returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

“One bystander was also struck during the exchange of gunfire,” Guglielmi stated, adding that no Secret Service personnel sustained injuries.

In his remarks, President Trump commended the security response, commending law enforcement agencies for their swift action.

Reports from several US media outlets identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland, who was said to have had previous interactions with security agencies and a history of mental health concerns.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
