Chinese President, Xi Jinping and Russian President, Vladimir Putin have reaffirmed their countries’ close strategic partnership, describing bilateral relations as being at a historic and unprecedented level during high-level talks in Beijing.
The meeting took place just days after Xi hosted United States President Donald Trump, in what analysts view as an effort to reassure Moscow of Beijing’s commitment to its longstanding alliance with Russia amid shifting global dynamics.

Speaking during bilateral discussions on Wednesday, Xi said the international environment was experiencing major transformations and portrayed cooperation between China and Russia as a stabilising force in global affairs.
“The international landscape is undergoing profound changes,” Xi said, while warning against rising global tensions and unilateral tendencies.
Putin was welcomed at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People with a state ceremony similar to the one held for Trump during his recent visit. The event featured military honours, national anthems and a ceremonial gun salute.
Although neither leader directly mentioned the United States during their public remarks, both appeared to signal concerns over what they described as increasing geopolitical pressures and instability.
Xi also reiterated his position on ongoing tensions involving Iran, calling for an end to conflict and emphasising the need to reduce disruptions affecting global energy markets.
Putin, in his remarks, described China-Russia relations as having reached an “unprecedented level” and stressed Russia’s role as a dependable energy partner amid global uncertainty.
Referring to Xi as his “dear friend,” the Russian president extended an invitation for the Chinese leader to visit Russia next year.
During the summit, both countries signed nearly two dozen agreements covering areas such as trade, economic cooperation, education, science and technology.
Russian officials also indicated progress regarding discussions on the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which is expected to further strengthen energy cooperation between the two nations.
The leaders additionally signed joint declarations aimed at deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership and promoting a multipolar global system.

Both sides also criticised aspects of the United States defence policy, expressing concerns about missile defence initiatives and broader issues relating to international security frameworks.
The meeting comes at a period of heightened pressure on Russia as the conflict in Ukraine continues, while China has maintained its position of presenting itself as a neutral actor despite sustaining strong economic and diplomatic relations with Moscow.
The summit also occurred against the backdrop of improving communication between Washington and Beijing following Trump’s recent visit to China, with discussions reportedly continuing on trade, investment and other bilateral matters.
Political observers say the latest Beijing meeting highlights the continuing importance of the China-Russia relationship as major global powers navigate evolving diplomatic and security challenges.
