U.S. Representative Andy Biggs has secured the Republican nomination for governor of Arizona, setting up a closely watched contest against incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs in the November general election.
Biggs, a former chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, emerged victorious in the Republican primary after defeating fellow Congressman David Schweikert and businessmen Scott Neely and Ken Miceli.
His campaign received the endorsement of President Donald Trump, a factor that played a central role throughout the primary race.
Representing a congressional district outside Phoenix for five terms, Biggs campaigned on issues including border security, tax reduction and conservative governance, while consistently highlighting Trump’s support.
Arizona is expected to remain one of the key battleground states in the 2026 election cycle, with political analysts closely watching the governor’s race.
Although Trump won Arizona in the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have enjoyed significant success in statewide contests in recent years. In addition to holding the governor’s office, Democrats currently occupy both U.S. Senate seats as well as the offices of secretary of state and attorney general.
In the closing days of the primary campaign, Biggs sought to broaden his appeal by portraying himself as a lawmaker capable of working across party lines.
He said that while he remains a committed conservative, his experience in Congress has shown that collaboration is possible even with those holding different political views.
The strategy is seen as an effort to attract Arizona’s large bloc of independent voters, who make up more than one-third of the state’s registered electorate.
Biggs has previously questioned the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, in which Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.
However, during a recent interview, he declined to revisit the issue, saying Republicans should focus on presenting a vision for Arizona’s future rather than debating past elections.
Meanwhile, Governor Katie Hobbs secured the Democratic nomination unopposed as she seeks a second term in office.
Hobbs narrowly won the governorship in 2022 by less than one percentage point and is expected to benefit from what analysts describe as a favourable national political environment for Democrats.
The Arizona governor’s race is widely regarded as one of the most competitive contests in the 2026 midterm elections and is expected to attract significant national attention.
