North Korea on Tuesday launched what South Korea described as an “unidentified projectile” into the Yellow Sea off its west coast.

The South Korean military confirmed the launch in a statement issued by Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“The North has fired an unidentified projectile into the West Sea,” the statement said, referring to the body of water located between the Korean Peninsula and China.

The latest launch comes about a month after the nuclear-armed North conducted multiple short-range ballistic missile tests.

At the time, North Korean state media said the exercise was aimed at verifying “the characteristics and power of a cluster bomb warhead.”

The development has further heightened tensions in the region amid continued concerns over Pyongyang’s weapons programme and military activities.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported last week that Chinese President Xi Jinping was likely to visit North Korea this week, citing unnamed government sources.

However, both China and North Korea have yet to officially confirm the proposed visit.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has continued to strengthen ties with Beijing and Moscow amid growing diplomatic tensions with Western countries over the country’s nuclear and missile programmes.
