Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained his decision to contest the 2027 presidential election alongside Peter Obi, saying their partnership is driven by a shared vision to change the way Nigeria is governed.

Kwankwaso, who is seeking the vice-presidential slot on the Nigeria Democratic Congress platform, made the statement on Thursday as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify.

He said Nigeria was facing serious challenges, including rising food prices, unemployment, high business costs and insecurity.

According to him, the country needs urgent reforms in key areas such as the economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure and governance.

Kwankwaso also expressed concern over insecurity, noting that terrorism, banditry and kidnapping had continued to disrupt communities and livelihoods.

He said farmers needed adequate security to return to their farms, while children should be able to attend school without fear.

“Our farmers need security to return to their farms, our children need safe schools, and every Nigerian deserves to live without fear,” he said.

Explaining his decision to partner with Obi, the former governor said their alliance was not based on regional, religious or personal interests but on what he described as a shared commitment to Nigeria’s development.

“This is why I have chosen to work with His Excellency, Peter Obi, on the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. Our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria,” he said.

Kwankwaso said the proposed administration would focus on accountable governance, economic opportunities and inclusiveness.

He added that the partnership was aimed at creating a country where government would serve the people, young Nigerians could build sustainable futures at home and citizens would have equal opportunities to prosper.

The former governor urged young people, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals to participate actively in the political process.

He also called on politicians to focus their campaigns on issues rather than ethnic or religious divisions.

“Let us move beyond politics of division and focus on the issues that affect our daily lives. Let us demand accountability, competence and results from those entrusted with public office,” he said.

Kwankwaso described the 2027 election as an opportunity for Nigerians to decide the country’s future direction and urged supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly.

He called on Nigerians to support the NDC and its candidates as part of efforts to rebuild the country.
