Brazilian football star, Neymar sparked controversy after reacting angrily to his substitution during Santos’ Brazilian Serie A clash against Coritiba, just days before Brazil’s World Cup squad announcement, intensifying discussions over his place in the national team.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute when match officials displayed Neymar’s number on the substitution board, prompting the forward to leave the pitch despite reports suggesting teammate Gonzalo Escobar was the intended player to be withdrawn.

Clearly frustrated, Neymar challenged the decision, gesturing at officials and reportedly displaying the substitution note to television cameras in an attempt to show that his name had been wrongly called. His protest earned him a yellow card before he eventually exited the field.

Santos later acknowledged the mistake, stating that the fourth official had made an error during the substitution process.

The match ended in disappointment for Santos, who suffered a 3–0 defeat and remains close to the relegation zone with 18 points from 16 league matches.

The controversy comes at a crucial stage for Neymar, who is attempting to prove his fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Brazilian forward has been absent from international action since October 2023 due to injury setbacks and a lengthy recovery period.

Since returning to Santos following knee surgery, Neymar has made 15 appearances and scored six goals, though recurring muscle concerns have continued to interrupt his progress.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to the national team, but head coach Carlo Ancelotti insists selection will depend strictly on performance and fitness levels.

Ancelotti recently stated that while Neymar remains one of Brazil’s most gifted players, several factors must be considered before final squad decisions are made.

The Italian manager noted that the player has shown significant improvement in recent matches but stressed that squad selection would be based solely on professional considerations.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his inclusion, Neymar insists he has done everything possible to earn a place in the squad.

“Physically, I feel great. I’ve been improving with every game,” the forward said, adding that his recovery journey had involved years of hard work amid criticism regarding his condition.

Brazil is expected to announce its preliminary World Cup squad shortly, with the final list of 26 players set to be confirmed ahead of the tournament.
