Residents of Ukehe and Agu-Ekwegbe communities in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State have been thrown into grief following two separate incidents in which family members were allegedly killed under disturbing circumstances.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed that the incidents occurred on May 15, 2026, and involved two male suspects accused of carrying out deadly attacks on close relatives.

Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said one of the incidents occurred at Nkporogwu Ukehe community, where a 40-year-old suspect identified as Anikwe Onyebuchi allegedly attacked and killed his 60-year-old mother, Felicia Anikwe, using a cutlass.

According to Ndukwe, officers from the Igbo-Etiti Police Division responded to the incident after receiving reports from residents and recovered the victim’s remains before moving them to a mortuary after medical confirmation of death.

He disclosed that the suspect was rescued from an angry mob that had allegedly attacked him before he was taken to a hospital for treatment and later rearrested by police authorities.

In another incident at the Agu-Ekwegbe community, a man identified as Joshua Eze was alleged to have killed his sister, Nwabuche Eze, and her daughter, Favour Eze.

Police said operatives from the Command’s Distress Response Squad responded to a distress call and recovered the victims’ bodies before depositing them at a mortuary.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, indicated that the suspect allegedly buried the victims in a shallow grave alongside a dead white cock, a development investigators said had raised suspicions surrounding possible ritual-related circumstances.

Authorities further revealed that the suspect was also rescued from an attempted mob attack in critical condition but later died while receiving treatment in the hospital.

Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the killings, describing them as barbaric and unacceptable.

He directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a comprehensive investigation into both cases.

The incidents have sparked shock and concern among residents, with many calling for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths.
