The Kebbi State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria has called for increased participation of young people in elective positions, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appeal was made by the state chairman of the council, Engineer Ahmed Khalifa, during the All Progressives Congress unity rally held in Birnin Kebbi at the weekend, according to a report by The PUNCH.
Khalifa, while acknowledging ongoing infrastructure development in the state, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for what he described as notable progress. However, he stressed the need to deepen youth inclusion in governance by creating more opportunities for them to contest elective offices.
“While youths in Nigeria and Kebbi State have had some level of representation, it is time to deepen that inclusion by creating more opportunities for them to run for elective positions,” Khalifa said.
The call comes amid renewed advocacy for youth political participation across the country, following the enactment of the Not Too Young To Run Act, which reduced age requirements for contesting elective offices and aimed to expand access for younger candidates.
Observers note that despite such reforms, youth representation in Nigeria’s political landscape remains relatively limited, with structural and financial barriers still constraining participation.
The Kebbi youth council maintained that empowering young people to seek elective positions would not only strengthen democratic governance but also harness the energy and innovation of Nigeria’s youth population for national development.
