The Delta State Police Command has initiated disciplinary proceedings against two officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting money from a motorist within a police station in Asaba.
The footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows officers attached to ‘C’ Division Asaba reportedly collecting money via a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, an act the Command has described as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and wholly unacceptable.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the incident occurred on January 13, 2026, and has since been reviewed by the Command authorities.
“The Command condemns the act in totality, as no citizen deserves such treatment from law enforcement officers. The conduct is inexcusable, unpardonable,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered an orderly room trial for the officers involved – identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. According to the Command, the disciplinary process is already underway, with assurances that its outcome will be made public upon conclusion.
Oyeniyi reaffirmed his alignment with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which strictly prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment systems within police formations.
He stressed that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any circumstances.
“The Command maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extortion and abuse of office. Officers are expected to conduct themselves professionally and uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens,” the Commissioner stated.
He further emphasized that the disciplinary action taken against the officers would serve as a deterrent to others, urging personnel to adhere strictly to the principles of accountability and respect for fundamental human rights as enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution.
The Command also commended members of the public for bringing the incident to light, encouraged continued reporting of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit.
