The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists and members of the public against assaulting its personnel, following the arrest of a suspect linked to an attack on its operatives in Edo State.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, condemned the incident, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on violence against officers carrying out lawful duties.

According to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 11, 2026, when a patrol team from the Edo Sector Command stopped a vehicle for a seat belt violation.

The driver reportedly fled the scene while an FRSC marshal was still engaged in enforcement. He later mobilised a group of commercial tricycle operators who launched a violent attack on the officers. During the assault, one marshal was pushed into a gutter, beaten, while the team leader also sustained injuries. The suspect initially escaped.

The Corps said the suspect was later tracked and apprehended through a coordinated effort involving the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS). He has since confessed to the crime, expressed remorse.

Commending the swift response of the security agencies, Mohammed stressed that assault on law enforcement officers remains a serious criminal offence that will attract the full weight of the law.

While acknowledging the suspect’s admission of guilt, the Corps Marshal assured that due legal process would be followed to ensure justice is served and to deter similar acts.

The FRSC urged the public to cooperate with its personnel and channel grievances through appropriate mechanisms rather than resorting to violence. It also confirmed that the injured marshal is in stable condition and receiving medical care.

The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to road safety, the protection of its personnel, and continued collaboration with security agencies to bring perpetrators of violence to justice.
