A former Commissioner for Transport in Rivers State, Sam Ejekwu, has emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state ahead of the 2027 election.
Ejekwu, a known ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was declared the party’s consensus candidate following affirmation votes from local government areas across the state.
The electoral committee that supervised the process was headed by Tajudeen Yusuf.
Ejekwu, who hails from Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, previously served twice as Caretaker Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Confirming the development, the PDP spokesman in the state, Dr Kenneth Yowika, said Ejekwu contested as the sole candidate and described the process as smooth and transparent.
Speaking after his emergence, Ejekwu expressed confidence in the strength of the PDP in Rivers State and pointed to the large turnout of party supporters as evidence of the party’s readiness for victory in the 2027 elections.
He also praised the Rainbow Coalition led by Wike in the state, saying the political alliance had the potential to reshape political alignments and move the state forward.

Ejekwu’s emergence as the PDP governorship candidate, alongside Kingsley Chinda’s candidacy in the All Progressives Congress, means the Wike-backed Rainbow Coalition has produced candidates in the two dominant political parties in Rivers State ahead of the next general election.
