There was tension in parts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday following protests by youths over the alleged shooting of a motorist by a police officer.

The protest reportedly took place around Agip Junction and Ada George, where residents and youths demanded justice for the driver and called for an investigation into the incident.

A viral video obtained by our reporter showed protesters calling on the police authorities to ensure that the officer allegedly involved in the shooting is brought to justice.

The protesters also appealed to the Rivers State Government to intervene and ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated rather than being swept under the carpet.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred at about 5pm on Thursday when police officers allegedly flagged down a motorist at the junction.

The eyewitness claimed that the driver failed to stop, prompting one of the officers to open fire at the vehicle.

The driver was reportedly hit by the bullet, lost control of the vehicle and subsequently crashed into three people.

The eyewitness further alleged that the officer fired additional shots while attempting to leave the scene.

Again, the incident reportedly angered youths in the area, who confronted the officer, allegedly seized his firearm and assaulted him before other police personnel arrived and took him away.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.

Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Rivers State Police Command were unsuccessful.

Several calls and messages sent to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, were not answered as of press time.
