Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has responded to the escalating political disagreement involving FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and some All Progressives Congress governors, declaring that his political camp is not afraid of any challenge.
Speaking at a political event in Abakaliki on Wednesday, Nwifuru was responding to Wike’s criticism of APC governors and to claims that President Bola Tinubu had allegedly conceded political control of Ebonyi State to Wike or the Peoples Democratic Party.
Nwifuru rejected the claims and insisted that his camp had the capacity to defend its political interests in Ebonyi.
“We are not afraid. We have all it takes to destroy whoever is trying us,” Nwifuru was quoted as saying.
The governor did not elaborate on what he meant by “destroy,” and the remark was made in the context of an ongoing political dispute. There was no indication in the statement that he was referring to physical violence.
WIKE CRITICISES APC GOVERNORS
Nwifuru’s comments came after Wike described some APC governors as “politically lazy” during a television interview on Tuesday.
The dispute followed opposition by APC governors to Wike’s proposed “Rainbow Coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governors have maintained that they would not participate in or endorse any political arrangement they believe could undermine President Tinubu’s re-election campaign or weaken APC candidates contesting other positions.
Wike, however, said he had never asked the APC Governors Forum to participate in the coalition.
The FCT minister has maintained that his cross-party political activities are intended to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election and do not amount to an alternative structure within the APC.
He has also argued that supporting Tinubu does not automatically require him or his political allies to support every APC candidate in governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.
The disagreement has triggered a series of public exchanges involving Wike and some APC governors as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
