US Vice President, JD Vance has shared new details about his personal faith journey, crediting his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, as a major influence in both his spiritual life and his upcoming memoir.

Speaking in a recent interview ahead of the release of his book Communion, Vance described his wife as a “fiercely independent” and “very direct” presence in his life, saying she played a key editorial role in shaping the work from refining chapters to removing material that “didn’t add anything of value.”

He said, “Fundamentally, the book wouldn’t exist without her,” noting that Usha Vance, who is not a Christian, still played a central role in encouraging and challenging him throughout his transition from Protestantism to atheism and eventually to Catholicism.

Vance acknowledged that his earlier public comments suggesting she might convert to Christianity had sparked criticism, but clarified that he now accepts she is unlikely to do so.

“Honestly, I’m OK with that,” he said, while emphasising that his faith still leads him to hope those close to him may one day share his beliefs.

The vice president also reflected on how his religious convictions have shaped his political outlook, including his views on the ongoing conflict involving Iran. He said Christian “just war” principles require leaders to carefully weigh moral questions before engaging in military action.

“I find myself constantly asking: Is this justified? Is this moral? Is this the right thing to do?” he said, adding that such reflection acts as a “limitation on political leaders.”

Vance, who has taken part in diplomatic discussions surrounding the Iran crisis, expressed cautious optimism that a deal could still be reached to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons, though he warned that enforcement and verification would be key challenges.

He also touched on broader political dynamics within the Trump administration, including debates over a proposed “anti-weaponisation” fund and ongoing speculation about the 2028 presidential race, particularly comparisons between himself and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Despite the political noise, Vance said his focus remains on governance and personal conviction, while acknowledging that his evolving faith continues to shape how he interprets leadership, loyalty and responsibility in public office.
