A 22-year-old University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) graduate identified as Anthony Obodo has been allegedly shot dead by police officers attached to the Agip Police Division in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, sparking protests and demands for an independent investigation and justice.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, Obodo was killed on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when he was allegedly pursued by a team of police officers for more than 30 minutes within the Federal Housing Estate, popularly known as Agip Estate.
A source close to the deceased’s family and familiar with the incident told RismadarVoice Reporters on Friday that Obodo, fearing that he was being chased by armed criminals, drove out of the estate towards Agip Junction, a busier area.
However, shortly after reaching the junction, a gunshot was allegedly fired at his vehicle.
The source said the bullet caused Obodo to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently crashed into three pedestrians. The pedestrians were critically injured in the incident.
The source said a crowd intervened and rushed Obodo to the nearby Pamax Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
He further alleged that police officers subsequently took away Obodo’s vehicle and body to an undisclosed location.
RismadarVoice gathered that the incident has triggered outrage and panic across the Agip area, with youths staging protests since the incident happened, while the deceased’s family demands justice for their son.
He said the protesters are demanding a transparent investigation into the incident and justice for Obodo and the three pedestrians who were critically injured.
Obodo’s family and residents of the area accused the police of using excessive and reckless force and called for a high-level investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The source said that Obodo’s parents — his father, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his mother, a civil servant-, were devastated by his death, stating further that Obodo’s necklace went missing after the shooting, further raising concerns about the conduct of the officers involved.
A senior police officer identified as Udechukwu, accompanied by several armed personnel, visited Obodo’s family residence on Friday at about 1:00pm
However, the source said no information was provided regarding whether any police officers involved in the incident had been arrested, suspended or subjected to disciplinary action.
One resident recalled that officers at the station had told a complainant last month that they lacked fuel to respond to a reported theft in Agip Estate.
“How is it that the same station has fuel to chase an unarmed young man for 30 minutes?” the resident asked.
The grieving Obodo’s family and residents of the community have demanded a full, transparent and independent investigation into Obodo’s death.
They also demanded that any officer found responsible for the alleged shooting and other misconduct be brought to justice.
All attempts to reach out on calls to the Rivers State Police Command for comments on the incident failed as the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Blessing Kaborlo,o did not answer calls made to her mobile phone number at the time of filing this report.
